Tim Lang
Mr. Lang is a candidate NH Senate District 2:
Belmont, Center Harbor, Gilford, Laconia-Wards 1-6, Meredith, New Hampton, and Sanbornton
Not Recommended
We have soured on Mr. Lang for reasons that include manipulating the legislative process in the last term using sleazy "non germane amendment" tactics to try to pass bills not in the best interest of Belknap County voters. Further, much of the funding for his campaign comes from casino interests, which suggests he might support casino expansion in the Lakes Region, and the trouble that comes with it.

Mr. Lang is a candidate for re-election in NH Senate in District 2, which includes the Belknap County towns of Belmont, Center Harbor, Gilford, Laconia-Wards 1-6, Meredith, New Hampton, and Sanbornton. It also includes towns outside the county, including Sandwich, Ashland, Campton, Holderness and Thornton.
He is a resident of Sanbornton, and has served in the NH Senate since 2022, and prior in the NH House beginning in 2016. He serves as the moderator for the Town of Sanbornton, and has served on the town budget committee and zoning board.
He has completed his Citizens Count survey.
Earlier in his career, Mr. Lang was considered a moderate Republican, but in recent years his NH Liberty Alliance libertarian rating has swung to its highest since 2021 when he was serving in the NH House, and 2026 was the second highest of his career at a B/80%. We consider a B grade as our threshold for libertarians.
ISSUES
He highlights four issues on his campaign website, including
01
Tax Relief
Defending the New Hampshire Advantage by opposing any broad-based sales or income tax and easing the burden on working families and small businesses.
02
Local Control
Empowering our towns to make their own decisions on education, zoning, and public safety — closest to the people they serve.
03
World-Class Education
Every Granite State child deserves the best possible start. That means investing in our public schools while empowering parents with real choice in how their children learn.
04
Lower Energy Costs
Bringing down utility bills by expanding our energy portfolio — including investing in renewables — diversifying supply, and protecting ratepayers from runaway expenses
Contrary to Mr. Lang's
Legislative Shenanigans
This past term, Mr. Lang was responsible for two pieces of legislation directly affecting Belknap County which has alarmed Citizens for Belknap.
A bill originally titled HB741, "AN ACT allowing parents to send their children to any school district they choose," sponsored by Belknap District 7 rep, Paul Terry, was passed in the NH House, but killed in the Senate. The bill, now known as a "school choice," would allow parents to enroll their child in another school district, and importantly, take the funding for that child with them. Education advocates widely saw this as a drain of public school funding and make smaller schools not financially viable. It was voted as "interim study", where bills go to die.
Enter Senator Lang. Using a sleazy trick called a "non-germane" amendment, Senator Lang stripped the content of a completely unrelated bill, HB 751, and dropped it in. It ultimately failed in a committee of conference.
Then he did it again, this time for a bill affecting ONLY Belknap County, for which there was little discussion and barely a hearing in the delegation meeting.
HB 1105 was a bill sponsored by Belknap District 8's Doug Trottier which changed Belknap County's county positions like county attorney, county register of deeds, county attorney and sheriff as 4 years, rather than the current 2 years. Citizens for Belknap vehemently opposed this bill due to the county's recent chaotic history at Gunstock. Such a change would not allow a rogue county official to be removed by the voters expediently. We mobilized House members from outside the county to help kill the bill.
With the help of Mr. Lang, it wasn't really dead. A floor amendment was added to a similar bill for Merrimack County, HB 1689, in the Senate. No hearing in the county, or notice that this was going to happen. Not cool. We found out almost too late to mount an opposition. It was killed during a House-Senate Concurrence vote, thanks to Rep Charlie StClair and Rep. Barbara Comtois.
Belknap County could stand for some more forthright legislating, and definitely more transparency.
Casino Interests Dominate Mr. Lang's Campaign Contributions
The largest share of Mr. Lang's campaign funding comes from casino operators, both inside and outside the state. An analysis of Mr. Lang's NH Secretary of State Campaign Finance System reports for the 2026 cycle finds that gaming companies account for 38.2% of his overall campaign contributions, but 53.2% of his contributions from business and organizations. Interestingly, he voted against casino expansion in 2017.
